Delivering the Bruce Highway safety upgrades

Workers in high vis

The Bruce Highway is Queensland's most vital transport route, stretching 1,673km from Brisbane to Cairns. It connects our communities and families, while supporting businesses and essential freight movements up and down the coast. The highway is a key part of life in Queensland and a driver of the state's economic success.

The Australian and Queensland Governments are getting on with fixing the Bruce Highway, with works underway to deliver critical safety improvements under the new $9 billion Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program.

In March, both governments announced an early start package for the new program to fast-track 16 priority projects north of Gympie with the greatest safety risk, with one project already completed and various others in construction.

The North Queensland region will benefit from multiple safety-focused projects on the Bruce Highway, including pavement strengthening occurring at Hencamp Creek (45 minutes north of Townsville), Toomulla intersection (40 minutes north of Townsville) and Alligator Creek (20 minutes south of Townsville). This will improve the safety and travel reliability for all road users.
